Teaching and Mentoring

Philosophy

My goal as a teacher is to empower my students to take ownership of their learning and foster their curiosity to understand how the world around us works. To this end, I employ teaching strategies that help students become motivated, engaged, and self-directed learners. I have found that strategies using interactive and hands-on instruction are most effective. Therefore, I strive to engage students in communication and provide them with the opportunity to learn from and interact with others. Furthermore, I use assignments and activities in which students work on real-world examples and problems that allow them to link their experience in the classroom to the outside world. It is important to me to provide a safe environment that allows students to think and explore.

Teaching is a dynamic process and I continuously reflect on and change my teaching. I am currently learning and applying new pedagogical practices and obtained the Postdoc Teaching Certificate at Stanford University in October 2020. These practices include, among others, designing courses using a backward approach, formulating carefully planned, clear and trackable course goals, using classroom assessment techniques to provide feedback on the teaching-learning process as it is happening, as well as strategies for active learning, creating inclusive and equitable learning environments, and online teaching.
